Afrique - Nigeria Names New Commander Against Boko Haram
Nigeria's military has appointed a new commander to lead operations against Boko Haram, a change announced on Wednesday, 09 September 2026, as the country prepares for presidential elections in January.
Major General Ibikunle Ademola Ajose, who previously served at Army Headquarters in Abuja, has taken over as head of Operation Hadin Kai. He replaces Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, who had held the post since April 2025 as the 15th commander of the operation.
The announcement was confirmed by army spokesperson Appolonia Anele, who described the appointment as part of a broader reshuffle involving 14 other generals. According to the statement, the changes are intended to improve operational effectiveness, strengthen leadership and align command structures with Nigeria's evolving security challenges.
A Reshuffle Ahead of Elections
The timing of the appointment is notable, coming just months before Nigeria's presidential elections scheduled for January. Insecurity has remained a persistent concern in the country, with insurgent violence, banditry and kidnappings affecting several regions well beyond the northeast.
During the last presidential election, security concerns disrupted voting in parts of northeastern Nigeria, a fact that adds weight to the current leadership change ahead of the coming polls. The army has not linked this particular reshuffle to any specific recent attacks in the region.
Scale of the Insurgency
The insurgency waged by Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province, has had a devastating toll since it began in 2009. More than 40,000 people have been killed and millions displaced, according to data cited from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.
These figures underscore why command decisions within Operation Hadin Kai draw close attention, both domestically and among regional observers. Each change in leadership is scrutinized for what it might signal about strategy heading into a politically sensitive period.
Command History and Turnover
Abubakar's departure after roughly a year and a half in the role continues a pattern of relatively frequent turnover at the top of Operation Hadin Kai, with Ajose becoming its latest commander. The frequency of these changes has often been read as an attempt to refresh tactics against an adaptive and long-running insurgency.
Regional security matters involving Nigeria and its neighbors are frequently monitored through bodies such as the African Union, whose official site outlines continental efforts on peace and security cooperation across member states.
Broader Regional Attention
News of Nigeria's military reshuffle has been picked up by outlets across the continent, reflecting how security developments in one country often resonate more widely across African media. Stories tracking African security, governance and economic trends are followed by readers well beyond the countries directly involved.

This remains a separate but related thread to the security and governance stories shaping the region's news cycle.
What Comes Next
With the reshuffle covering 15 generals in total, attention will likely turn to how quickly the new commanders settle into their roles before the January elections. Whether the changes translate into a shift in operational outcomes against Boko Haram and ISWAP remains to be seen in the months ahead.
For now, the appointment of Ajose marks another chapter in a security campaign that has spanned more than a decade and multiple commanders, with the stakes heightened by the approaching vote.
